Select Try Outs

Our try-outs (evaluations) are normally held September/October and March/April, depending on division.

In Select tryouts, although some focus is placed on the player’s skills, coaches will also be looking for players who exhibit a positive and enthusiastic attitude, possess a strong willingness and cooperation to learn, and most importantly, demonstrate a firm commitment (100% effort at all times) and desire to play ball at a more competitive level.

Requirements:

  • Must be enrolled for house league with Richmond Hill Minor Softball Association.
  • Please note: All players must tryout for the appropriate team at their age level.  Players may only tryout/play for another Select team at a higher age group with permission from the coach of the team in their age group.

What is Select softball?

The objective of our Select Program is to train and develop selected house league players to become better ball players in an atmosphere of having “FUN” coupled with positive feedback and encouragement. Our focus will be on conditioning and raising the performance and effort of each player with the goal of increasing the overall skill level and competitiveness of the team. Playing Select is ideal for those players who want and are prepared to work and play at a higher competitive level and represent Richmond Hill at tournaments throughout the summer.

Competition

Our select teams normally enter into 3 to 5 tournaments throughout the summer: June, July, and August. Tournaments are usually one-day events and are normally held on a Saturday or Sunday. The format is a round robin with teams playing a minimum of 3 games and some traveling is required.

Financial Commitment

In addition to house league registration costs, there will be a nominal fee to cover the select uniform and tournament registration fees. Typically the cost is about $200, depending on the number of tournaments and/or extra exhibition games individual teams choose to play. Select players are expected to have their own glove, batting helmet with cage, fielding mask and softball cleats (rubber tipped). Batting gloves are optional.

Time Commitment

In addition to the tournaments, select players are required to play for their respective house league teams during the regular season. Regular season for house league will consist of at least one game and one practice per week. Select players will also be required to attend one additional practice that will not conflict with their house league schedule.
